Manchester United fans are busy speculating in the Football Transfer Tavern after the Daily Star reported that Borussia Dortmund have completed the signing of Freiburg centre back Mathias Ginter – possibly as a replacement for Mats Hummels?
The German centre back is believed to be high on Louis van Gaal’s list of transfer targets, having starred for his country during their World Cup triumph in Brazil.
United chiefs have made an enquiry regarding the centre back’s availability and it seems a deal could be struck in time for the new season.
The Bundesliga giants have confirmed the signing of Matthias Ginter from Freiburg, who has signed a contract with the Signal Iduna Park-based club until 2019.
Ginter had previously been linked with both United and Arsenal but opted to stay at Freiburg to gain regular first team football.
The deal for the 20-year-old suggests Dortmund may well be preparing for life without Hummels next season, with United now encouraged to launch a £20 million bid.
Louis van Gaal has made strengthening his defence a priority, following the exits of both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.
The Dutchman has been a long-term admirer of Hummels and has made him a priority signing for the Red Devils this summer.
