There seem to be plenty of stories inside the Football Transfer Tavern linking Manchester United to midfielders at present – probably given that the Red Devils are looking for a player to succeed Paul Scholes – and Daniel Taylor of The Observer reckons they are lining up a move for Benfica star Nemanja Matic.
Ferguson’s scouts have been busy hunting for a successor to Scholes who seems to be on his way out after a glittering career, and have sounded out Matic after his impressive performances have helped put Benfica top of the Portuguese Primeira Liga and into the Europa League semi-finals.
The Serbia international who was once at Chelsea is likely to come at a price however, having recently signed a new five year contract with the Portugese giants.
United have made a top quality midfielder top of their priorities for the summer, with Paul Scholes close to retiring, and Anderson’s future up in the air after another season in which he has failed to establish himself as a first choice.
Matic has been so impressive for Benfica, he was even singled out for praise by Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew after their Europa League exit on Thursday.
“The way they kept the ball was fantastic, but Matic in particular,” Pardew said. “The way he has grown since he has gone away from Chelsea … he’s a terrific player for them.”
United are wary that Manchester City will be seriously looking to strengthen in the summer, and have identified Matic as a crucial target in order to keep the gap next season.
