The Express indicate that Manchester United are plotting a January bid for Saint Etienne left back Faouzi Ghoulam with the future of Patrice Evra remaining unclear.
As has been well documented in the tavern, newly appointed United boss David Moyes spent an unsuccessful summer trying to bring Leighton Baines from his former club Everton but the Toffees stuck it out to see the England international remain at Goodison Park.
United supporters are still holding hope that they can land the 28-year-old when the January transfer window opens but today’s reports suggest that Moyes could start to look at other targets with the 22-year-old Algerian on his wishlist.
The Old Trafford club could also face competition from Serie A giants AC Milan for the defender, who was the subject of a failed bid from Torino in the summer, something Ghoulam bears the scars from.
He said: “I would love to finish the season here now, it has been a very difficult time for me in the summer with the Torino affair.
“However, things go quickly in football so we never know what is next.
“Manchester United? You are always flattered when such a big club is linked with you but I do not want to dream, the reality is to give 100 per-cent for St Etienne and see what will happen next.”
The left back has spent his career playing with Les Verts, slowly emerging on the French scene as one of the finest young players in Ligue 1.
As one punter quips, he could represent a solid option if a deal for Baines cannot be agreed as Moyes looks to replace 32-year-old Patrice Evra following his shaky start to the season.
Would the Algerian defender be a suitable acquisition for United? Is Evra destined for an emotional return to Monaco? Let us know your thoughts below.
