There are a few drunken tales in the Football Transfer Tavern today that Manchester United are looking to shore up their shaky defence by bringing in Benfica centre half Ezequiel Garay in the summer.
The Sun reports that the 26-year-old has already been extensively watched by Sir Alex Ferguson’s scouts and the club have now let the Portuguese champions know they are interested.
Ferguson faces a fight to secure the former Real Madrid man with Serie A leaders Juventus also thought to be keen admirers of the defender.
The Argentine international, who is valued at around £15 million, struggled to get games under Jose Mourinho in Madrid but has impressed since arriving in Portugal 18 months ago which has led to interest from some of Europe’s biggest sides.
United have had issues at the back all season and Ferguson now feels the need to shore it up with Garay’s capture as Rio Ferdinand is approaching the end of his contract at Old Trafford. If the English leaders make a bid for the defender it seems unlikely that nor he or his club will be in a rush to turn it down.
