Manchester United: Inter Milan confirm Sanchez loan

Inter Milan have confirmed the signing of Alexis Sanchez by welcoming the Chilean to the club via their official Twitter account.

Premiership Picks

The 30-year-old has joined the Serie A giants on loan until the end of the season, following a terrible 19 months at Manchester United.

The former Arsenal wide man scored just once in the Premier League for the Red Devils last season and became surplus to requirements under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the Norwegian brought in 21-year-old winger Daniel James from Swansea City earlier this summer.

Having been so prolific at both Barcelona and Arsenal, Sanchez’s rapid demise at Old Trafford has left the entire footballing community utterly perplexed.

In Spain, he hit just under 50 goals in just over 140 appearances, while at the Emirates he found the back of the net on 80 occasions in 166 games (via Transfermarkt).

Since Solskjaer’s arrival last winter, Sanchez has made only 15 appearances for United, scoring once. Indeed, the Red Devils boss voiced concerns about the Chileans commitment to United this season which is why he was happy for him to leave, despite the club not having too many other options in attack.

Solskjaer also believes that now is the time for United’s younger players to step-up.

“I’m trusting Anthony, Marcus, Mason to be our centre-forwards,” said the former Red Devils front man. “We’ve got wingers in Chongy [Tahith Chong], Dan James, [Andreas] Pereira. We’ve loads of options.

“For me it’s time for our boys to feel that pressure and responsibility, to be more robust, to know they have to play five games in a row. I trust the fitness staff and medical staff and the pre-season work; we’re mentally and physically more ready. That’s the next step for our young players.”

The debate surrounding Sanchez’s well-documented fall from grace at Old Trafford could go on for hours, days, even months.

Now, with a completely blank canvas to work with, hopefully he will start to regain some of that earlier form which at one point made him one of the most enjoyable players to witness play the beautiful game, week in, week out.
