It was not long ago here in the Football Transfer Tavern that we were linking Real Madrid’s Luka Modric with a move to Chelsea given his current manager Jose Mourinho will be taking up the managerial post there next season and now according to Fantix, Manchester United are set to make a play for him too.
United have long been linked with the playmaker and it had been thought it would be Sir Alex Ferguson who landed the player when he left Tottenham. That was not to be and after a somewhat inconsistent season at the Spanish giants, it now seems that Modric could well be on his way again.
The player initially transferred to Real Madrid for £33 million and now would leave for slightly less given his form especially at the start of the season which saw him voted the second worst signing in Spain of the season. After a cracker of a goal ironically against Manchester United, the player rediscovered the form that prompted Mourinho to pay so much for him and it seems that both Chelsea and United would be keen on taking the player this summer.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that should Carlo Ancelotti arrive as Real’s new coach, Kaka would be willing to stay and Modric is worried that the manager who made Kaka one of the best in the world would chose the Brazilian ahead of him, pushing him further down the pecking order.
David Moyes is on the lookout for a playmaker in midfield and is seriously considering making a tentative approach for the player to see where it gets him.
