It’s been an interesting summer for Manchester United supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern as new manager David Moyes looks to make his own mark at the club.
The Old Trafford outfit have so far been linked with stellar signings including a possible return of Cristiano Ronaldo, a move for former Arsenal man Cesc Fabregas and a failed attempt to sign highly-rated Barca youngster Thiago Alcantara but it now looks very likely that will be left frustrated in these ambitious pursuits.
Today’s The Times instead reports that Moyes will now move for Real Madrid £25m star Luka Modric after realising that they are unlikely to secure any of their prime summer transfer targets.
The 27-year-old former Tottenham man could act at the ex-Everton manager’s back-up plan as he looks to recruit a top-class midfielder for his new side.
Modric has had a difficult debut season at the Bernabeu since his £33m transfer from White Hart Lane last summer although he finally gained regular football under former Madrid boss Jose Mourinho towards the end of the campaign.
The Croatian playmaker has even admitted he may be open back to the Premier League where he performed so impressively for Tottenham and a switch to the reigning Premier League champions may suit all parties.
United may yet face competition from Mourinho who reportedly hold ambitions to for a reunion with Modric at Stamford Bridge.
