There are some reports that won’t go away in the Football Transfer Tavern and seeing Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay linked with a move to Manchester United is one of these instances.
Former Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson had repeatedly tried to sign the Argentine international but to no success and he remains in Portugal.
However today’s Metro reports that David Moyes is now hopeful of landing the 26-year-old when the transfer window re-opens in January as he seeks to add to his current squad at Old Trafford.
United supporters in the tavern are tucking into their Saturday specials when they hear the news but as one punter points out what has changed to see the defender now arriving in Manchester?
Luckily the landlord is on hand to explain that Garay has a desire to play in the Premier League and this could help force a transfer through with the Portuguese outfit looking for around £20 million for his services.
Although United appear unwilling to go higher than £15 million, that could be enough with Benfica not wanting to keep an unhappy player at their club.
Garay has long been outlined as a replacement for ageing Rio Ferdinand at Old Trafford and the former Leeds United man could be moving into his final season as a United regular with his contract set to expire in the summer.
FC Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala is also on his list as possible replacements for the former England international, but the Benfica centre back remains the top target
Can United have more luck in their pursuit for the highly-rated defender this time around? Let us know your thoughts below.
