The Football Transfer Tavern is packed full this evening as punters in the bar look forward to the opening day of the season tomorrow. Manchester United supporters have been distracted from the upcoming football by reports from the Daily Star suggest that the Red Devils could move for Real Madrid midfielder Angel Di Maria if Tottenham star Gareth Bale eventually transfers to the Bernabeu.
Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas had outlined a swap deal with cash and the Argentine winger as part of a possible deal to take the Welsh international to Spain, but Di Maria was against a switch to White Hart Lane.
The 25-year-old has insisted that he won’t be leaving Carlo Ancelotti’s new side this summer, but United boss David Moyes – who is still in the market for a big-name signing – is ready to try and lure him to Manchester.
United could face competition from France as Paris St-Germain are also thought to be looking at the winger whose chances of first-team football at Madrid could change if Ancelotti can secure Bale this summer. Landing the Premier League star could limit Di Maria’s opportunities and that could see him push for a move away before the transfer window closes.
Di Maria hit a number of goals for Real in La Liga last season and would add the sort of attacking threat Moyes wants in his first season at Old Trafford.
He admitted yesterday that the hunt continued for his summer signings, saying: “We’re involved in several players we’re looking at and that will continue.”
