It is a rather exciting time for Manchester United fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern and it is all down to Metro.
The publication seems to think that the Red Devils are favourites to land Lionel Messi in the future, ahead of the likes of Manchester City, Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain.
Messi would cost them at least £100 million, almost certainly making any move for Real Madrid pair Gareth Bale or Cristiano Ronaldo next to impossible.
These reports come after the Argentine superstar suggested he could leave his beloved Barca in the future, following an interview with the Ole publication this week.
Now whilst we would think any move for Messi would involve a whole load of complications, not least trying to convince Barcelona to part with him, landing the Argentine would be a massive coup by anyone’s standards.
Although, quite if he would be willing to go to a club who have missed out on the Champions League once before and could do so once again remains to be seen.
Another thing that one of our punters notes is the fact that United are in dire need of some defensive reinforcements and that will eat into a sizeable chunk of their transfer budget.
That said, most of our punters take Messi-related rumours with a pinch of salt, such is his distinction with the Catalan club.
Some even suggest that these reports have come about just because he appeared at Old Trafford for Argentina in the international friendly with Portugal this week.
