The Express today suggests that Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio is the latest name being targeted by Manchester United.
As is well-known in the Football Transfer Tavern, United boss David Moyes is desperately looking to strengthen his side with some true quality in the current transfer window.
According to Italian reports, the Red Devils have been touch with the Turin club to check the availability of the 27-year-old and could be ready to pay £20 million to bring him to Old Trafford.
Moyes is reportedly eager to reinforce his midfield in January as he looks to halt his side’s decline and the experienced Italian international could be the ideal solution.
With United seventh in the Premier League, out of the FA Cup and 2-1 down following the first-leg of the Capital One Cup semi-final, it’s fair to say that United supporters in the bar believe that signings are a necessity at Old Trafford
Now it is being reported that after Juventus were eliminated from the Champions League group stages in December that the Serie A champions may have to sacrifice some of their star names in a cost cutting exercise.
Today’s report puts the estimated resulting financial shortfall at £17 million, would be paid off by selling Juve reluctantly Marchisio to United. Juve appear to have solid cover for the midfielder with Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal considered the Old Lady’s future by coach Antonio Conte.
Marchisio came through the youth ranks in Turin but he is understood to be worried about his World Cup chances and that could see him making the switch to England.
He told the club’s official television channel last month: “I want to continue winning with this jersey, I have no intention to change.
“But every year, especially in summer, there have been rumours that involved me.
“In addition to this one, I have another two years on my deal with Juventus.
“I hope to play as long as possible with this jersey, it’s not my intention to change.”
It seems that United first approach was rejected, but should they meet Juve’s valuation we can see no reason that the talented midfielder may answer Moyes’ call soon.
Is there any point in Moyes chasing a midfielder who is so settled in Italy? Let us know your thoughts below.
