After seeing off Valencia in midweek with a workmanlike performance, Manchester United once more seem to be back to their old selves. Despite this, Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly looking at bringing more midfielders to Old Trafford, as the likes of Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves prepare to move on in one way or another. So just who are the possible future generation at Manchester United?
The Standard Liege central midfielder was rated the most valuable player in the 2007/08 Belgian Superlig at the age of 19, and has since then became a full-time captain and led Standard Liege to their first title win in 25 years. Over the past three seasons, Defour has been linked with countless clubs, but there are now rumours of Manchester United making a fresh bid for the promising young midfielder.
Another popularly linked player is Valencia’s Argentinian maestro Ever Banega. Banega did not have a good time when on loan with Athletico Madrid, but the 2009/10 season went significantly better with a third place finish behind Barcelona and Real Madrid. On the international scene, Banega has won under-20 honours (In the 2007 World Cup) and with the olympic side in 2008.
Serigne Kara Mbodj
Undoubtedly the man of mystery on this list of potential “ins”. The Senegalese 20-year old can play in defence as well as midfield, and currently plies his trade for Norwegian Tippeligaen side Tromso IL – who finished 6th in the 2009 season. In actual fact it is Arsenal who are red hot favourites to land Mbodj for 3m, but it has also emerged that this would only be as back up for Alex Song. As such, the lure of the Emirates may be somewhat diluted, meaning that Fergie could usurp the deal and start a major war of negotiations in January. Watch this space…
