Shock is not the word here in the Football Transfer Tavern as Manchester United fans look up with dismay at the latest claim from the Daily Mail.
The publication think that the club could well be about to move for a League One defender!
As our barmaid quips, yes the summer may not have gone exactly how United fans or David Moyes wished, but they still had plenty of money to spend and after all, the January transfer window is not that far off.
One thing that they did not expect to hear however, is that the move that is being weighed up post summer window is one for Sheffield United’s Harry Maguire.
One of our punters just ordered a shot at the bar and asked who exactly that was. Well our landlord was more than happy to fill him in whilst reaching for the top shelf tequila.
The young defender has notched up three full seasons as a first team regular already for the Blades, and has broken into the England Under-21 ranks to boot.
At 6 ft 4 in, who could blame United for taking a look at the defender – who could well turn out to be a steal at £4 million.
Quite if he is ready to take over from Rio Ferdinand or Nemanja Vidic at the back is the golden question, but Moyes could do well to bring him into the club and allow him to develop and watch the two legends go about their game – even loaning him back out to Bramall Lane for the interim.
Will Moyes make a move for Maguire or are United well stocked at centre back, what with Smalling, Jones and Evans waiting in the wings? Let us know your thoughts below.
