Manchester United have made an offer for Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, according to FC Inter News.
It is claimed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given the hierarchy his approval to sign the Gunners’ ace this summer as a potential replacement for Romelu Lukaku and it is thought they have already tabled an offer worth around €69million (£62m).
Arsenal are thought to be resisting the offer at the moment, although a move would appear to be something the Gabon international would like as Tuttosport recently claimed the lethal forward had already said ‘yes’ to joining Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Aubameyang has an excellent goalscoring record for Arsenal since signing for a mammoth £56m fee from Borussia Dortmund 18 months ago (BBC) and it might not be a big surprise to hear Solskjaer is interested in the 30-year-old.
He has netted 31 goals in his 51 appearances for Unai Emery’s side across all competitions as he helped take them to a Europa League final, as well as finishing as the joint-top goalscorer in the Premier League in the 2018/19 campaign. According to WhoScored, in those appearances, he managed an average of 2.6 shots per match in England’s top-flight, which is more than Marcus Rashford (2.5) and Lukaku (1.7).
It would not be the first time Manchester United were to look to try and pinch one of their rival’s most prolific forwards, with the likes of Robin van Persie and Alexis Sanchez both having made the move from north London to Manchester.
The Dutchman may have been rather successful during his time at Old Trafford (58 goals in 105 appearances across all competitions), but the same cannot be said about the Chile international.
Sanchez has come in for plenty of criticism for his performances with many believing he does not justify the extortionate wages he is currently earning (including Paul Ince as he launched a scathing attack and branded his performances as a joke) – with Goal claiming it could be in excess of £500,000-a-week.
In his 45 appearances for United, he has managed just five goals in his 18 months at the club after having recorded 80 strikes in 166 appearances for Arsenal. Those poor figures may want to make Solskjaer’s side think about a move for Aubameyang.
It would be interesting to see if the Red Devils make a move for Aubameyang this summer. But, having scored 65 goals last season in the Premier League (fifth most), whether Manchester United need another striker is something that could be questioned, whilst the 30-year-old hardly fits the desire to inject youth into the first-team the manager has.
With the likes of Rashford and Anthony Martial in reserve should Lukaku depart this summer, Solskjaer would potentially be better off spending the money he would on the Gabon international elsewhere. For example, the defence is an area that has been criticised heavily and is one part of the squad that could do with some investment.
Having conceded 54 goals last season in the top-flight, their backline has come in for scathing criticism on numerous occasions throughout last year’s campaign, with Gary Neville suggesting Manchester United needed a “new defence in its entirety” following the defeat to Barcelona, whilst Roy Keane, who is hardly one to mince his words, slammed the current back-four and stated his former club needed a complete overhaul after their loss to arch-rivals Manchester City.
