Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has told the club that he will not be signing a new deal at Old Trafford, as he continues to try and force a move to Real Madrid, according to Marca.
The Frenchman has been heavily linked to a move to the Spanish capital all summer long, but with a deal failing to be completed as we edge ever closer to Monday’s transfer deadline, it looks as though he will remain in England until next summer at least.
Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has made no secret in his desire to secure the 26-year-old’s signature, but United have remained firm on their stance regarding the midfielder and have been reluctant to entertain any offers for him from Los Blancos.
Despite Pogba making it abundantly clear that he wants to move away from the club for a new challenge earlier this summer, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still reportedly views the ex-Juventus man as a pivotal member of his team this season, starting him in all three of the Red Devils’ opening Premier League fixtures.
Indeed, the 2018 World Cup winner has started the campaign relatively well, assisting two goals whilst registering an average of 2.3 key passes per match, per WhoScored. The 26-year-old has also averaged an astonishing 8.3 successful long balls per game so far, proving just what an asset he is to the team when his mind is on it. Considering the pace upfront in the shape of Anthony Martial, Daniel James and Marcus Rashford, that sort of range could prove invaluable in launching counter-attacks, as seen with the latter’s opener against Chelsea at the start of the campaign.
It looks as though he will now remain at Old Trafford at least for this season in terms of time left in the window to complete such a big deal, which is undoubtedly a boost for United. Still, going forward, if he does continue to push for a move away beyond this summer’s deadline, the Red Devils should just cash in on him while he is still at his peak and of maximum value.
No one is, after all, bigger than the club despite their quality, as proven in the days of Sir Alex Ferguson.
