Manchester United players were said to have worked hard in pre-season, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer even developing a particular style of play according to The Sun.
It is also being reported by the Sun that the club will sack Solskjaer if they lose to Norwich City at the end of the month.
However, if they get hammered by Liverpool after the international break then the Norwegian could be sacked sooner.
Whatever occurred in pre-season clearly hasn’t come to fruition on the pitch for the Red Devils this season. The club have endured a disastrous campaign thus far, winning just two of their eight Premier League games.
Back in April, Roy Keane claimed that the current crop of players would throw Solskjaer ‘under a bus’ as he questioned their commitment to playing for the former Norway international (via Sky Sports). The last two results show that the Irishman was correct in his assessment of the players, with Manchester United having just three shots on target across games against AZ Alkmaar and Newcastle United, showing a clear lack of effort from the players (via WhoScored).
In the summer transfer window, players like Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku, Matteo Darmian, Chris Smalling, Antonio Valencia and Ander Herrera all left as the club looked to get rid of the deadwood (via The Metro). However, players like Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford have performed horrifically this season, scoring just three goals combined in all competitions.
The club’s pre-season plans may have gone well, but their failure to fully replace players that left or were underperforming last season has hurt them this season. The squad at Old Trafford is woeful and has been a direct influence on their results this campaign.
Is this the worst Manchester United team in the Premier League era?
