The Football Transfer Tavern was packed for last night’s England’s international friendly against Chile.
The overall feeling was a sense of disappointment as the South American outfit put a poor England side to the sword.
One of the many disappointments was the performance of highly rated Everton left-back Leighton Baines who seemed to struggle against the fantastic Alexis Sanchez.
Now Mirror Football bring us big news about the Toffees man as they suggest that Manchester United will sign Baines for £16 million in January.
Newly appointed United boss David Moyes tried desperately to recruit the 28-year-old during the summer, but unlike his team-mate Marouane Fellaini, he remained at Goodison Park.
However, the Red Devils are now poised to land the former Wigan Athletic defender when the transfer window opens in the New Year as Moyes seeks a straight replacement for French international Patrice Evra.
Other options for United included Real Madrid’s Fabio Coentrao, but that deal seems dead in the water after a potential loan move collapsed on deadline day.
As one punter correctly points out, signing Baines would have an added benefit as the defender is not cup tied for European games and can be included in the next squad for the knock out stages.
Will United indeed get this move across the line in January? Let us know your thoughts below.
