There is some sensational news reaching us in the Football Transfer Tavern today as The Independent reports that Manchester United may join the race for Tottenham’s Gareth Bale.
The news comes after the White Hart Lane side became increasingly frustrated over the drawn out negotiations with Real Madrid for the 24-year-old superstar.
United are yet to make an official offer for the PFA Player of the Year but their failure to land a big money acquisition could persuade them to move for the Welsh international as new boss David Moyes look to deliver a marquee signing at Old Trafford.
Moyes has failed in his attempts to sign Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona while luring Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford always looked unlikely.
Spurs are thought to value Bale at around £110 million which could still put the Premier League champions out of the running but a possible swap-plus-cash deal with Mexican striker Javier Hernandez would certainly appeal to Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas.
United could be being used by firm negotiator Daniel Levy as a means to flush out a serious offer from the Bernabeu with doubts beginning to emerge whether the La Liga club can actually afford the proposed world record transfer.
Madrid were thought to be ready to offer over the £80 million they paid for Ronaldo back in 2009 but with only three weeks of the transfer window remaining, Spurs are yet to receive an official bid from the Bernabeu club.
Will United really get involved in the race for Bale? Let us know your thoughts below.
