All of the talk in the Football Transfer Tavern among Manchester United supporters appears to concern the future of striker Wayne Rooney at the club, however while all the focus has been on the England international it appears that new manager David Moyes has actually been prioritising his defence.
Charles Perrin from The Express reports that Moyes will make Ezequiel Garay his next signing after a fee was agreed with Benfica for the 26-year-old Argentine international centre back.
The deal thought to be in the region of £17 million will see the former Real Madrid defender make the switch to the Premier League as doubts grow about current first choice central defender Nemanja Vidic’s long-term fitness.
Vidic will miss United’s pre-season tour with an ongoing back injury and that has seen Moyes turn to Portugal in search of a replacement for the Serbian star.
Garay was outstanding for Benfica during their run to the Europa League Final last season and he was known to be a top target for former manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Moyes now appears to have taken on some transfer advice from his predecessor in his attempt to add further steel to the Red Devils backline.
