Not many things silence the punters in the Football Transfer Tavern but David McDonnell, of The Mirror, has done exactly that. David is suggesting that Manchester United are ready to smash their transfer record for Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas.
The Red Devils have targeted the former Arsenal playmaker, after missing out on his fellow Barcelona team-mate, Thiago Alcantara (A group of Manchester City fans were asked to leave after they refused to stop laughing!)
Anyway, once the disruptions had subsided, David continued by intimating that David Moyes would be willing to spend up to £31 million on Fabregas, which would just break United’s previous transfer record of £30.8 million, which was spent on bringing Dimitar Berbatov to the club from Tottenham.
I have to ask the United fans to quieten it down, as their excitement builds over the potential signing of the Spanish international and, I then, have to remind them of Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova’s comments earlier this week:
“I’m aware there have been offers. I had a conversation with him and he told me that he wanted to continue here and that he didn’t want to go to another big club. He wants to succeed here.”
Another stumbling block for the current Premier League Champions is the first refusal/buy-back clause that Arsenal have on their former captain, especially considering the Gunners are threatening to flex their financial muscles this transfer window.
Will Manchester United’s pursuit of Cesc Fabregas prove fruitless? Let us know your thoughts below.
