There is some big breaking news in the Football Transfer Tavern this evening.
Steve Bates from The Sunday People claims that Manchester United have reportedly agreed a deal to bring highly-rated Portuguese midfielder William Carvalho to Old Trafford in the summer.
The news comes after it was reported that his agent, a name familiar to those in the tavern, Jorge Mendes was given a tour of the club’s Carrington training ground.
While we will ignore the fact that Mendes has numerous clients already at Old Trafford, Bates suggests that this will see Carvalho linking up with his new team-mates after the World Cup.
A £37 million deal has apparently been set in stone as United trigger his release clause and personal terms are already in place to make him David Moyes’ first signing of the summer.
The Angola-born defensive midfielder has been attracting attention following some superb performances with Sporting Lisbon and could be set for a surprise call-up to the Portuguese national team for the World Cup.
Carvalho could now take the same route taken by compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo from Sporting to Old Trafford and United fans hope he will be as successful as their former hero.
Having suffered a summer of misery last year, Moyes and Ed Woodward are clearly not messing about with Dortmund pair IIkay Gundogan and Marco Reus, Toni Kroos and Luke Shaw among their list of possible targets.
With Champions League looking unlikely these targets could all prove unattainable unlike Carvalho.
Is this the sort of signing United required to ensure improvement next season? Let us know your thoughts below.
