There’s a feeling inside the Football Transfer Tavern that we could be in for another summer long transfer saga, with Carl Markham of The Independent reporting that Everton have rejected a bid from Manchester United for their star left back Leighton Baines.
David Moyes is keen to make the full back his first big name signing at Old Trafford, but his former club have insisted the defender is not for sale at any price.
Chairman Bill Kenwright has told Moyes he is in no mood to negotiate for the defender, although that has not put United off in the past, and they are expected to return with a higher bid.
Reports have suggested United’s opening offer was between £10 million and £12 million for the England defender – a price the Toffees see as well below the correct value, considering Baines is now challenging Ashley Cole to be England’s first choice left back.
Everton’s new manager Roberto Martinez, who succeeded Moyes in the Goodison Park hotseat, is expected back in the country tomorrow after travelling to the Confederations Cup to be a pundit for American television. His first priority upon his return will be to have talks with Baines to assure him his future lies with the Merseyside club.
Baines himself said only yesterday how he was excited to work with the new manager.
“He was one of the first names linked with the job and the feeling straight away was he would be a great appointment,” he said.
“He has a different style to what we have been used to but I think it is progressive and it will move us forward.
Baines added on evertontv: “We’ve chatted on the phone. We missed each other’s call a couple of times but we eventually spoke last week.
“It was just about speaking about the start of the season and looking forward to working with each other.”
