According to the Daily Star, the Red Devils made an audacious bid to bring Barcelona midfielder Xavi to Old Trafford.
Louis van Gaal made signing a central midfielder his main priority this season, however the 34-year-old midfielder was not persuaded by the Dutch boss to pack his bags.
Xavi’s decision prompted van Gaal to instead make a move for Athletic Bilbao star Ander Herrera who the Red Devils signed for £30 million in July.
Reports also suggest that Xavi’s former manager Pep Guardiola also tried to sign the midfield maestro this summer.
But the Bayern Munich boss also failed to lure his former player to the Allianz Arena.
In the end the former Spain international midfielder decided to stay at his boyhood club for at least one more season after turning down a move to Qatar.
