Manchester United defender nearly departed in January

Guillermo VarelaThe Manchester United supporting regulars here in the Transfer Tavern haven’t had too much to shout about this season and have regularly been crying into their pint pots during this season.

The United contingent are preparing themselves for a summer of high activity, in the way of arrivals and departures as the club look to re-establish themselves as one of Europe’s elite clubs.

According to some news in the landlord’s copy of The Metro one player very nearly left the club in January, only to have the transfer blocked by boss Louis van Gaal.

Right-back Guillermo Varela has said that a move to Genoa was thwarted after a conversation with the Dutch boss.

He told Uruguayan radio station Sport 890: “I saw I wouldn’t play, I would have few chances.

“I spoke to the manager and he told me that no, I couldn’t go, because I was going to play.

“Everything happened so quickly that you don’t believe that you’re playing in the most important league in the world.

“I have taken it calmly, training hard and looking forward.”

The 22-year-old was the first signing of the ill-fated David Moyes era at Old Trafford and his performances when called upon this season have been fairly reasonable.

One United fan is playing on the fruit machine and he believes the Uruguayan defender still has a future at United, and given his age, the club should look to use him in the team more often.

United fans… Are you pleased Varela stuck around? Does he have a future at the club?
