Things just have not gone to plan for Romelu Lukaku during his time at Manchester United.
Signing for a mammoth initial £75million in 2017, many may have been disappointed with what he has contributed in the two seasons at Old Trafford. With this article written by the Sun on his birthday (May 13th), the negative feelings shown towards him by sections of the support online are all too apparent.
According to statistics compiled by Transfermarkt, in his two Premier League years with the club, Lukaku has only managed to find the back of the net 28 times in 66 appearances. That is some drop on the 68 goals he scored in his 141 top-flight matches for Everton.
Sky Sports claimed earlier this month that Man Utd would be prepared to offload him if they were to receive an offer near the figure they splashed out on him, something we recently wrote about in a previous article on Transfer Tavern, believing it would be a great piece of business if they were able to recoup the fee.
However, that looks rather unlikely at the present moment of time, even if Inter Milan are thought to hold an interest in the Belgium international.
According to a report by Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), they suggest that a deal will be ‘impossible’ to complete and the Serie A outfit would need to offload one of their superstar names this summer in order to be able to get a transfer over the line – the names suggested are Ivan Perisic, Mauro Icardi and Radja Nainggolan.
Indeed, seeing a club stump up a fee of around £75m for a player who looks to be out of shape and a shadow of his former self could be wishful thinking on Man Utd’s behalf.
Just taking a look at his stats from WhoScored can leave a sight for sore eyes and one that is hardly going to encourage anyone to break the bank for.
He managed just an average of 1.7 shots per game and provided his team-mates with less than one key pass a match (0.7). And, his stats continued to get worse the further you look into them.
He completed less than one dribble per game (0.7), he was found offside 0.7 times – perhaps that had something to do with the extra weight and how unfit he was as Gary Neville eluded to? – whilst his ball control was absolutely shocking. Lukaku had been dispossessed 1.4 times on average per game and made an average of 1.6 bad touches per match, with talkSPORT pundit Micky Gray describing the former Chelsea man as having the worst first touch he’d ever seen at Premier League level back in May.
If United want him gone, it would not be a surprise if they had to reduce their transfer demands.
