The Benfica centre-back is currently available for €66million (£59.2m) but the Portuguese outfit are thought to be working to try and get the 22-year-old to commit to a new deal that will see it increase to €88m (£79m) as they believe the current one is within the grasps of potential suitors.
Manchester United are not the only club thought to be taking an interest in Dias this summer, with the likes of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Arsenal and Real Madrid all credited within the report.
Defence appears to be a priority for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this summer, with the links to Dias only being added to those of Leicester City’s Harry Maguire, although a move for the centre-back looks to have hit a snag. It is hardly surprising though, as their leaky backline has been a bit of an issue and clearly needs tightening up as conceding 54 last season in the Premier League was not good enough.
Dias, who was one of the first names on the teamsheet for the Portuguese outfit, had an excellent campaign for Benfica last year and recorded some rather encouraging statistics. According to WhoScored, the Portugal international managed to make an average of 1.4 tackles per 90 mins and 0.9 interceptions in his 32 Liga NOS appearances.
In comparison, Victor Lindelof (who was their top-performing centre-back last season per the stats recorded) managed to make 1.3 tackles and 0.8 interceptions in the 30 Premier League matches he featured in for the Red Devils.
Dias also appears to fit the transfer strategy that Solskjaer is looking to adopt this summer as he targets young and fresh additions to his Manchester United squad. Following the additions of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, the Portugal international is of the same age bracket and could potentially become a solid addition next to the Swede enforcer they currently have at Old Trafford.
Manchester United’s defence needs to be improved significantly this summer if they are to finish higher than sixth in the Premier League next season and Dias appears to be a player that has all the attributes and potential to be able to help them do that.
With his release clause currently standing at £52.9m amid a keenness from Benfica to try and increase it, plus the alleged interest from others, the Red Devils are going to have to act quickly if they want to see him playing his football at Old Trafford in the upcoming campaign.
