Manchester United set to make swoop for ex-Barcelona defender

The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are thoroughly disappointed with their loss at Huddersfield Town, meaning that fierce rivals Manchester City could build up a lead at the summit of the Premier League.

There have been question marks made over their defence in the past and those will have come to light again in yesterday’s game.

But according to reports in Portugal, Manchester United are set to make a move for a promising young left back.

Portuguese media outlet Record via Metro is reporting that Jose Mourinho has given the go-ahead for Manchester United to complete a move for Benfica’s Alex Grimaldo.

Grimaldo is highly rated in Portugal having made the move from Barcelona in late 2015 for just €1.5m.

It is believed that Benfica now value the 22-year-old at €40m.

Manchester United have sent scouts to watch Grimaldo on regular occasions this year and have been impressed with what they have seen.

The former Spain under-21 international never appeared for Barcelona’s first team but has been making strides at Benfica and catching the eye of a number of suitors across Europe.

The possible arrival of Grimaldo once again casts doubt on the long-term future of Luke Shaw at Old Trafford.
