Manchester United's summer transfer window was a frustrating one all around for manager Jose Mourinho, who saw the club fail to bring in a number of targets he had identified.

The Red Devils got off to a winning start to Premier League football last weekend but this week saw them fall foul to Brighton, who ran out 3-1 winners at the Amex Stadium against a lacklustre looking Red Devils side.

The arrivals of Fred and Diogo Dalot will no doubt be good additions long term, but United need immediate success to close the gap to rivals City, and we at the Transfer Tavern think the club missed a trick not signing £90m-rated Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

Serbian midfielder Savic is a dominant presence in the middle of the park and is exactly what United needed, with his talent for creating chances matching his work rate and toughness.

Impressive in the summer over in Russia, it was widely expected he would make his move away from the Rome club, however, a move did not materialise, and surely United are regretting not capturing one of Europe's most impressive young players.

Milinkovic-Savic is a superb midfielder by all accounts, and despite his hefty price tag, the Red Devils really should have snapped him up.

United might well fall short in the title race this term once again, and it's a safe assumption to make that the club would have been much improved had they signed a player of the quality of Milinkovic-Savic.
