Manchester United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are still filled up with delight having beaten Chelsea to the signature of Romelu Lukaku.
The departures of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney indicated that a striker was a priority for Jose Mourinho this transfer window.
Accordingly, Romelu Lukaku was purchased from Everton to become the Red Devils’ leading striker for the coming season.
With Rooney’s return to Everton complete, the only two recognised strikers that Mourinho has at his disposal are Lukaku and Marcus Rashford.
While Martial can also operate as a striker, as he did during his time at Monaco, the Frenchman has fallen somewhat out-of-favour under Mourinho’s guidance, losing his place in United’s starting eleven.
Our landlord believes that the Red Devils should target another striker, to ensure that United enter the upcoming season with sufficient depth and enough competition to certify that the team plays to the best of their abilities.
Our landlord has highlighted Celtic’s Moussa Dembele as an option that Manchester United should pursue.
Before joining the Scottish Champions, the 21-year-old scored 17 goals in 46 games for Fulham in the 2015-16 season.
Last season, the Frenchman improved on this total scoring a stunning total of 32 goals in 48 games.
While it would be wholly unrealistic to expect Dembele to dismantle Romelu Lukaku as United’s leading striker – especially when Mourinho has recently paid £90m for his services – Dembele’s presence would provide Lukaku with genuine competition.
Also, it enables Mourinho to see if he could potentially field two strikers as opposed to maintaining his 4-2-3-1 formation.
In a season where United will be vying to win four competitions, squad depth is vital, the addition of Moussa Dembele would provide exactly that.
