Alexis Sanchez has completed a medical ahead of his season-long loan move to Inter Milan (via Calciomercato).
The 30-year-old is set to join the Serie A titans on a 10-month contract, but United have not included an option to buy the attacker upon the expiry of that loan deal (as per Manchester Evening News). It is understood that Inter will be paying three-quarters of Sanchez’s astonishing £400,000-a-week wages.
Manchester Evening News report that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided on the Chilean’s fate 5 months ago, however, and was keen to offload any players he felt weren’t committed to the club moving forward.
The Norwegian felt as though if Sanchez stayed at the club, he would have a negative impact on his team-mates which is why he is happy for him to leave, despite United having a lack of attacking players in their current squad.
Romelu Lukaku was sold to Inter for £74m earlier this month, leaving only Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and 17-year-old Mason Greenwood as the only out-and-out strikers available to Solskjaer this term.
Ander Herrera also departed Old Trafford and joined Paris Saint-Germain at the start of the transfer window, leaving Paul Pogba as the only wantaway player left at the club. The Frenchman‘s quality was deemed too high to overlook, even though he has been extremely vocal about his wishes to move to Real Madrid this summer.
Since joining United in 2018, Sanchez has massively failed to live up to expectations. The Chilean was such a destructive force at Barcelona and Arsenal, but seemed to just lose his ability all together as soon as he joined the Red Devils.
Indeed, having only found the net five times for his current employers in almost two years, it is clear he has now become surplus to requirements in the north west.
His stats at Arsenal – where he scored a total of 80 goals and provided 45 assists in 166 appearances for the Gunners – prove how much quality he has at his disposal.
