Manchester United fell to their first defeat of the season as they succumbed at home to Crystal Palace.
It was a nightmare day for the Red Devils who saw Marcus Rashford miss a penalty to continue their woes from 12 yards, and despite Daniel James getting another goal, Crystal Palace took all three points thanks to Patrick van Aanholt’s late winner.
To make things worse for United, they suffered injuries to key duo Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer telling the club’s official website after the game he is hopeful both injuries are not serious.
Solskjaer confirmed that Shaw ‘felt something in his hamstring’ while he simply said they would have ‘to wait and see’ in terms of Martial, despite admitting he was hopeful both would be fit for the game with Southampton next week.
Injury to Shaw in particular would be a bitter blow for a player who has struggled with injury ever since making the move to Old Trafford (as shown on Transfermarkt). However, Shaw did win the player of the year award at United last season and he will be hoping to build on that throughout the course of this season.
United’s loss to Palace already sees them five points behind leaders Liverpool after only three games.
United need to hope these injuries are nothing or they might as well call it curtains for their Champions League aspirations.
Shaw is vital, winning plaudits from his manager last term, and Martial has already been in the goals this season, so they would both be losses if seriously injured.
For United in general, this was a shock to the system and arguably another indication they are nowhere near good enough to challenge for the title.
