The Daily Mail have caused Manchester United fans to raise their eyebrows and put down their pints here in the Football Transfer Tavern.
The publication claim that Shinji Kagawa has remarked that it is not he, but manager David Moyes who should be asked why he is not in the side at present.
Many have spoken about their surprise that the Japanese international has failed to make an impact at Old Trafford since his move from Borussia Dortmund – including former manager Jurgen Klopp, yet both Sir Alex Ferguson and new manager David Moyes don’t seem to fancy the attack minded midfielder.
After scoring in a recent international for Japan, Kagawa spoke to the media and noted that: “Please ask David Moyes why I’m not in the (Manchester United) side.
“It is frustrating not playing but to score a goal like that gives me confidence. Hopefully I can take that back to my club with me and things will improve.
“It’s hard not playing regularly. Some days the frustration is worse than others; it comes in waves.
“So it’s nice to come back to Japan and get to play, and to score felt good.”
One thing that United fans seem to be impressed with when it comes to their number 26 is his work rate and willingness to pitch in – and that is clear with his latest comments, after he claimed: “I just have to keep working hard and keep pushing for my chance. When I get back it will be a challenge to get into the team.
“When I get back to my club I have to wait for my chance in the Champions League and the Premier League. I’m sure my chance will come.”
Clearly the player has confidence in himself – and so do the majority of football fans, who were behind a recent Twitter campaign during the transfer window – entitled #freeshinji – which of course failed.
As our landlord points out over pouring a perfect pint, Moyes can hardly not give the player his chance at some point, especially given the question marks over some members of United’s current central midfield crop.
Will Kagawa go on to star for Manchester United or will it be the case that he turns out like Juan Sebastian Veron?
