Wayne Rooney has been told to put his transfer request in writing if he wants to leave Manchester United – and that claim by the Daily Mail has got everyone in the Football Transfer Tavern talking this afternoon.
The publication claim that the forward will have to make it official if he wants to leave the club and new boss David Moyes will not let him go without a fight.
It is thought that Rooney would prefer to stay in the Premier League and link up with returning Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, yet the 27-year-old also has options in North London with Arsenal interested and also in La Liga with both Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid and Catalan giants Barcelona sniffing around the former Everton man.
Rooney himself has urged United to make it clear that he did not ask to leave the club – as former manager Sir Alex Ferguson claimed and will strongly deny ever making such a request – meaning that to hand in an official transfer request looks an unlikely course of action for the player.
United for their part are determined to keep hold of the forward and will not consider selling the England international – unless he formally requests a transfer.
