Manchester United fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern have been left reeling by the claim in the Daily Mail who think that the club may well receive a formal transfer request from Wayne Rooney this week.
The forward and his future have been keeping us entertained all summer and the saga has had more twists and turns than a blockbuster movie with Rooney leaving, staying, waiting for the fans reactions and now willing to hand in an official request to leave – again (depending on who you believe of course).
David Moyes may want to keep the England international at the club but as one of our regulars notes over his pie and mash, it seems more out of determination to keep him out of Jose Mourinho’s clutches than anything else.
The Blues manager already has to contend with the fact that Didier Drogba is long gone and Frank Lampard can no longer play every game, meaning that Demba Ba and Fernando Torres are all he has in terms of experience. Mourinho may have claimed he can fix Torres but we think he will be placing all of his eggs in the wildcard Romelu Lukaku basket should he fail with a bid to land Rooney.
Chelsea as we all know are not short of a bob or two and are willing to pay £40 million to land the forward – small change by their standards for a forward who may or may not do the business.
Will Rooney hand in a transfer request at Old Trafford? Let us know your thoughts below.
