The Football Transfer Tavern is quite shocked as Rob Draper from Mail Online claims that David Moyes is preparing to offer midfielder Tom Cleverley a new five-year contract worth £15 million.
Draper explains that the club hope the England international sees it as a vote of confidence amid a wave of criticism.
The 24-year-old is the subject of petition by England ‘fans’ who don’t want to see him in Roy Hodgson’s squad and he was unfairly booed by England supporters when his name was read out during Wednesday’s friendly against Denmark.
While we realise that the midfield man has struggled for form most here in the tavern believe that personal criticism on this level is unfair.
However that doesn’t mean we think that Cleverley should be rewarded for his poor displays with a bumper new contract at Old Trafford. He still has time to develop into the player he looked like being a few seasons ago but this is a risky strategy by Moyes.
Do you think that the under-fire midfielder is really worthy of such a lucrative contract at Old Trafford? Should poor form really be rewarded in this way? Let us know your thoughts below.
