Manchester United star’s Old Trafford career is over

rioManchester United fans in the Football Transfer Tavern look set to say goodbye to club legend Rio Ferdinand but accept that it’s time for him to leave.

The Mirror claim the centre back has played his last game for the Manchester Club after being told he will not have his contract renewed for next season.

The 35-year-old was reportedly told that his contract would not be extended after the 1-1 draw with Southampton on Sunday – ending the former West Ham United academy players’ 12-year stint at the club.

And Rio Ferdinand took to Twitter to confirm that he will not be given the chance to add to his 454 Manchester United appearances.

Ferdinand heads a trio of seasoned pros leaving the club with Nemanja Vidic leaving for Italy and Patrice Evra also set for the Old Trafford exit doors.

The former England defender became the most expensive defender in Britain when he joined from Leeds for a whopping £29.1 million in 2002 and became a cult hero at the club.

It is not yet known what manager will be sanctioning the transfers this summer but whoever it is must be set to receive a more than healthy warchest to work with.

It’s fair to say that it’s the right time for Ferdinand to leave. But who’s going to replace the trio of Ferdinand, Evra and Vidic? Let us know your thoughts below.
