Manchester United fans inside the Football Transfer Tavern are busy speculating the possible ins and outs at Old Trafford this summer.
One name that has just cropped up is long-term target Ezequiel Garay of Benfica with The Express suggesting that the defender could be sold in the summer.
The 27-year-old was understood to be a major transfer target for former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and there had been rumours that his predecessor David Moyes would consider the Argentine defender.
It had been thought that a deal was agreed with Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg which could have ended any thought of landing the Benfica man, but the deal collapsed and instead he remained at the Portuguese club.
Now his agent has suggested there was interest from another club during the transfer window, sparking rumours it was from Old Trafford.
Benfica are facing a financial crisis and sold star midfielder Nemanja Matic to Chelsea in January. With Garay entering the final year of his deal and United certainly in the market for a top quality centre back after Nemanja Vidic confirmed he is joining Inter Milan, these comments must be viewed in a positive light for Moyes.
He said: “Benfica resisted offers so the transfer didn’t materialise at this stage, mainly because they wanted to have the best players to be able to fight for titles.
“It may have been a difficult decision for us to understand but we have embraced it.
“We will see what happens in the future.
“Right now the market is closed and Garay is concentrating on sporting matters, achieving the best possible results and, of course, having a great World Cup.
“Certainly there will be further discussions in the future to clarify the situation.
“In the summer he will be entering the final year of his contract with Benfica, so logically there will be news.
“But at this moment, I insist, Garay is only thinking about Benfica.”
We could realistically see Garay heading to Old Trafford in the summer but what do you think? Let us know your thoughts below.
