We at the Football Transfer Tavern have been just as frustrated as David Moyes over Manchester United’s summer spending but the new boss is now set to move for Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric, according to The Guardian.
United were told yesterday that they will not be signing long-term target Cesc Fabregas this summer as the Barcelona star is adamant that he wants to stay playing for his boyhood club.
Moyes was desperate to land Fabregas but will now switch his interest to Modric who may be available to buy from Madrid.
The former Tottenham playmaker initially struggled to settle in the Spanish capital and was once voted for as the ‘worst signing of the season’ in La Liga.
However the Croatian found his form towards the end of last season under Jose Mourinho and became a key man in the Real midfield.
Gareth Bale’s proposed move to Spain could well be the key to Modric’s future as Real Madrid may well be happy to sell the 27-year-old to free up funds for the Welshman.
Modric only moved to Spain last summer for £35 million but could be available for just £25 million as Moyes looks to strengthen his weak centre of midfield.
The likes of Tom Cleverley, Shinji Kagawa and Anderson have failed to convince Moyes that they are the ideal partners to Michael Carrick and so a central midfielder has always been the priority for the former Everton boss this summer.
Marouane Fellaini is the back up option for Moyes who wants a deal done before the start of the season in seven days’ time.
