Manchester United fans in the Football Transfer Tavern had been left enthused by recent suggestions that Cristiano Ronaldo could make an emotional summer return to Old Trafford as David Moyes tries to make a standout signing in his first season after replacing Sir Alex Ferguson as boss.
However Spanish daily Marca has now all but ended these dreams by reporting that Ronaldo has instead agreed a new five-year at the Bernabeu. The 27-year-old will now stay with the La Liga runners-up until 2018 after increasing his salary to over £14 million after tax.
The Portuguese attacker has been at Madrid since his world record £80 million transfer in 2009 and the player, who has a rate of more than one goal a game, will now recognise a nine-year stay with the Spanish giants if he fulfills his new contract in its entirety.
In his 199 games for Madrid he has found the net 202 times and the former best player in the world remains a huge part of Carlo Ancelotti’s new side despite reported interest from Manchester.
United are now likely to up the ante in their quest to bring Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas to Old Trafford this summer as they look to improve their team ahead of a Premier League title defence. The 26-year-old former Arsenal man is understood to be keen on a summer switch back to England.
