It’s been rather depressing of late for Manchester United supporters here in the Football Transfer Tavern as their season fails to get started under new manager David Moyes.
Sky Sports now reports that United’s hopes of signing Ander Herrera have been hit after Athletic Bilbao stated that the subject was ‘closed’
Bilbao president Josu Urrutia admitted that while United made a last ditch offer for Herrera, he does not expect the English side to move again for the 24-year-old midfielder.
Some United fans in the bar thought that Herrera was a United player on deadline day only to be informed that in fact the club had been duped into believing that three lawyers were working on their behalf to agree a deal at the Spanish headquarters.
The latest speculation suggested that Moyes was ready to revive his interest in Herrera when the January transfer window re-opens after only adding Everton’s Marouane Fellaini to his side since taking Sir Alex Ferguson’s job as manager during the summer.
However, Urrutia has now confirmed that he does not want Herrera to leave Bilbao and has told the player to focus on achieving success with his current club.
“I don’t know what other teams will do, but I consider the Herrera issue to be closed,” Urrutia told a press conference.
“Ander has a contract until 2016. All players have to focus on giving Athletic all you can give.”
Is now the time for United to give up the chase for the Spanish midfielder? Let us know your thoughts below.
