The Daily Mirror has a surprising claim for us here in the Football Transfer Tavern as they note that Leighton Baines may well be set to pen a new contract at Everton.
The left back has long been linked with a move away from Goodison Park and was on the top of Sir Alex Ferguson’s transfer wishlist at Manchester United before the club icon retired.
Now it seems that Fergie could well be set to see his former club miss out on the full back as Everton are close to getting the England international to pen a new deal.
After becoming frustrated with the lack of agreement between his current club and former manager’s new side, Baines has considered the possibility of penning a new deal with Everton as the season draws ever closer.
Given Baines turns 29 soon, it is understandable that Moyes and United are unwilling to pay more than a second take it or leave it bid of £12 million and will not offer more than that given they already have Partice Evra to boot.
Should an agreement not be reached before the start of the season, Baines is happy to place his future in the hands of new Toffees boss Roberto Martinez and see in a new era on Merseyside.
