Metro have a rather disappointing claim for us here in the Football Transfer Tavern as they think that Manchester United could well be set to miss out on PSV Eindhoven’s Kevin Strootman this summer.
The Old Trafford-based side have long held an interest in the Netherlands international and even during the reign of Sir Alex Ferguson, they were linked with the PSV midfielder.
Now it seems that Strootman will not become one of David Moyes’ first signings in charge, given the fact that his current club are determined to keep hold of him for one more season at least.
PSV director Marcel Brands noted that: “Strootman we do not want to lose. He knows himself he will stay one more year at PSV.”
Given that PSV have already lost Dries Mertens to Napoli, Jeremain Lens to Dynamo Kiev, Erik Pieters to Stoke City and Mark van Bommel to retirement this summer, it is understandable that they would try to cling on to the 23-year-old who is most certainly their most prized asset.
This news is of course a blow to David Moyes who is currently trying to convince Wayne Rooney to stay at the club amid links with Chelsea and Real Madrid and has even seen Arsenal launch a bid for the striker who United are facing up to life without it seems.
Is this the end of Manchester United’s summer pursuit of Strootman? Let us know your thoughts below.
