There are some disappointed looks in the Football Transfer Tavern today as Jack De Menezes from the The Independent reveals that Luka Modric is not interesting in returning to the Premier League.
The news comes after he confirmed his plans to retire at his current club Real Madrid.
The Croatian international, who made the switch from Tottenham last summer in a £33 million deal, struggled with life at the Bernabeu in his early days, but has now established himself as a regular in Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
Modric, 28, was linked with a possible move to Manchester United in the summer transfer window, but he had now denied any thoughts of leaving Spain and insists that his future remains in Madrid.
Speaking to Croatian newspaper Sportske Novosti before his country’s World Cup qualifiers against Belgium and Scotland, Modric said: “I have no doubt that the best thing that ever happened to me in football is to play in Madrid.”
Asked about his possible future plans, Modric answered “Where will I be in four years? Here.
“Besides being a great club, my family feels amazing in Madrid. In football it is difficult to plan, but if you ask me, I would like to retire in Madrid. With titles, of course.”
Modric fitted the bill for United manager David Moyes as he looked for a midfielder who could add creativity to the side he inherited from Sir Alex Ferguson but Modric decided to ignore the reported interest from Old Trafford with Moyes only landing Everton’s Marouane Fellaini in a highly disappointing transfer window.
Should United step up their chase for the former Tottenham man or does this spell the end of their interest? Let us know your thoughts below.
