Manchester United to rival Manchester City for £65m duo

It’s possible we could witness a proper Super Sunday in the Football Transfer Tavern today as the Daily Star indicates that Manchester United are set to battle with rivals Manchester City for another set of transfer targets.

The two Manchester sides are understood to be chasing Porto defenders Eliaquim Mangala and Nicolas Otamendi in a huge £65 million deal.

Argentina’s Otamendi, valued at £25 million, is the new name linked with a move to the Premier League while Mangala, 22, is well known as a target for both City and United with the Portuguese club thought to be looking for around £40 million.

Last week Old Trafford chief Exceutive Ed Woodward, who has received much criticism for a disappointing summer transfer window in the tavern, confirmed that David Moyes would be given money to spend in the winter window. The former Everton manager is understood to be targeting at least one centre back and a new left back.

The latter position is likely to be filled by England international Leighton Baines as Moyes tries again to land the classy Everton defender while one of the Porto duo would fit the bill for a new centre back at Old Trafford.

However they will have to fend off interest from City as International Recruitment Manager Rob Newman watched the pair last weekend. Manuel Pellegrini is thought to be worried about the lack of options at centre back and either of the Porto defenders could be on their transfer radar.

Interestingly the same reports suggest that Porto are looking for a January loan deal for Red Devils midfielder Anderson to return to the club after six years away. As one punter points out, could this be a way for United to beat City and smooth over the deal for the top class defenders?
