There are some intriguing reports in the Football Transfer Tavern today.
The Express suggests that Manchester United and Manchester City are planning to make attempts to sign Barcelona sensation Andres Iniesta before he pens a new deal at the Camp Nou.
Here in the tavern we always thought it was a foregone conclusion that the legendary Spanish international would sign a new bumper contract to remain with the La Liga champions but the latest reports have cast some doubts.
The paper indicates that the delay in getting his new contract signed could see the two Premier League rivals jumping in with massive offers to lure the 29-year-old – who has spent his entire career with Barca – to England.
He recently dismissed suggestions that he would consider leaving the Camp Nou, but that hasn’t prevented speculation from emerging as United and City supporters get their hopes up.
Iniesta said: “The club knows that and wants me to stay, so I hope and expect to spend the years I have left playing there.”
New Barca coach Gerardo Martino, who has collected a 100 per cent record so far, appears to be another reason why the creative midfielder will remain with the Catalans.
“Tata has come in and kept things ticking along,” he added. “The philosophy he believes in and gets across is very similar to the one we have had all along.”I am hoping for a great year and that is the way things are shaping up.”
