In this instalment of our TT Roundup, Football Transfer Tavern have gathered three of the biggest stories to have involved Manchester United recently and have provided our thoughts on the reports published.
United target Koulibaly and Rice
Manchester United have made Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly and West Ham midfielder Declan Rice their key transfer targets for next year, according to the Goal.
The Red Devils find themselves in dire straights having won just two of their eight league games this term, falling to an embarrassing defeat against strugglers Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.
Because of this, reinforcements are deemed a necessity, with Koulibaly reportedly being lined up to partner £80m Harry Maguire in the heart of defence.
Rice, meanwhile, is likely to cost an awful lot of money considering his current contract at West Ham does not expire until 2024 and he is one of the most promising English central midfielders around given his inclusion in Gareth Southgate’s international set-up.
Moves for Rice AND Koulibaly certainly seem ambitious considering the pair would cost big money combined, though if they could secure one of them then it can be deemed as extremely good business considering their respective statuses.
However, if United fail to achieve a top-four finish this time out, it will significantly weaken their position to sign any top-class player due to them not having the bargaining tool of Champions League football at their disposal.
Howe urges Wilson to ignore United transfer rumours
Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has urged Callum Wilson to ignore the rumours surrounding him and a potential move to Manchester United in January, according to talkSPORT.
Wilson moved to the south coast from Coventry in 2014 and has gone onto establish himself as a top-flight striker at the Vitality Stadium.
He has become a regular member of Gareth Southgate’s England squad as back-up to first-choice frontman Harry Kane and because of this was touted with a move to Old Trafford in the Sun.
Wilson’s current manager, Eddie Howe, has insisted that any transfer gossip surrounding his striker should be taken ‘with a pinch of salt’, though.
“To hear transfer rumours circulating now the window is shut and far from opening, for me it’s pointless talking about it,” said the Cherries boss. (via talkSPORT)
Eddie Howe is right to tell Callum Wilson not to become distracted with hearsay surrounding a potential move to Old Trafford, though from the club’s point of view making a move for the England international in January would perhaps be a shrewd move considering his age and experience in the Premier League.
Having already outscored both Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, perhaps Wilson could be a good option to help bring goals into the ranks amid a difficult start to the campaign.
