The Football Transfer Tavern has grown quiet of late after the closure of the summer transfer window but news emerging today has caused a stir around the bar.
Alan Nixon from Mirror Football has taken a seat to suggest to punters that David Moyes is preparing a January bid to bring Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke to Old Trafford.
Nixon confirms that the former Everton manager is a big fan of the powerful Belgian international who has been so impressive since joining the Premier League last season.
The Scot has realised that his current attack lacks height and strength and with the uncertainty over Wayne Rooney’s contract, he could move for the talented 22-year-old Villa forward who would certainly instil some physical presence up front.
Moyes watched Benteke during Belgium’s World Cup qualifying victory over Scotland at Hampden Park on Friday and has now outlined him as the next major striker to arrive at Old Trafford.
Benteke only signed a new £60,000-a-week deal in July as Villa managed to keep him away from watching suitors including Tottenham but boss Paul Lambert understands that offers will be made for the striker during the January transfer window.
Dutch forward Robin van Persie is the main option in attack for Moyes but Benteke would offer a younger choice as Moyes looks to the long-term and that could see a swoop for the former Genk striker during the next transfer window.
Nixon admits that United make face competition for the forward from Spurs and Arsenal who both had shown interest this summer.
Can Manchester United realistically land Benteke in January or will Villa dig their heels once more? Let us know your thoughts below.
