Manchester United were planning stunning £80m swoop

Cristiano RonaldoHere in the Football Transfer Tavern punters are enjoying a few Sunday beverages enjoying one of the final days of summer when Rob Shepherd from Mail Online bursts into the bar to announce some stunning revelations about Manchester United’s transfer activity.

Shepherd suggests that United still want to lure former star man Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford and were trying to complete a deal before the closure of the transfer window on Monday.

Given new United boss David Moyes’ ‘bungled activity’ during his first window, this could go some way to explaining why Marouane Fellaini was bought for £5 million more than his original release clause while becoming the only new arrival at Old Trafford on deadline day.

The news has been met by gasps among Red Devils supporters who would love to see the Portuguese international forward back in Manchester at the club where Sir Alex Ferguson made him the player he has since become.

Reports suggest that new Chief Executive Ed Woodward, who has come under as much stick as Moyes, was actually plotting a summer move to buy back Ronaldo from Madrid after the original transfer had been hatched by Ferguson and David Gill.

United are ready to sign another sponsorship deal with Nike worth nearly £1 billion and they have set aside funds to sign the 27-year-old in the near summer with an £80 million deal thought to be enough to land the world’s second best player as he only has two years left on his contract at the Bernabeu.

The Manchester United brand would certainly be enhanced once more by the arrival of Ronaldo at Old Trafford and his agent Jorge Mendes would be eager to see a deal completed.

The transfer could have happened in the summer but the lengthy transfer pursuit of Gareth Bale to Madrid delayed matters but now punters in the tavern have been given hope that they could yet see Cristiano pulling on the number 7 Red Devils jersey again sometime soon.

Will we see Cristiano Ronaldo back at Manchester United sooner rather than later? Let us know your thoughts below.
