Man Utd are the latest side to be linked with midfielder Claudio Yacob. Italian site TutterMercatoWeb reports Sir Alex will move for the combative Argentinean when his is available for free in the summer.
But Man Utd face competition for the 3-cap international from Arsenal and Benfica.
Yacob is a U-20 World cup winner, currently playing for Racing Club in Argentina’s Premier Division. The club are keen to retain him, but he has thus far refused to sign a new deal, and little seems to stand in the way of his departure this summer. Very few choose to remain in the Argentine league when big clubs from Europe come calling.
The Mail had previously reported Arsenal were closing in on a deal for the player. Wenger was said to have already enquired about the player in the January window, and he may now wish he had moved then as interest in the player looks sure to grow between now and the summer.
The ‘Mascherano-esque’ player would be a real coup for Wenger, and add some much-needed grit in the centre. However, with Scholes return only temporary Man Utd face a similar problem in the centre of the park.
This transfer may indicate to what level Arsenal can still go toe-to-toe with the likes of Man Utd when it come to attracting players. Man Utd will be hoping their guarantee of Champions League football will be enough to win Yacob, as currenly it seems the Gunners can not make the same promise.
