The Daily Star believe that Sir Alex Ferguson is poised to achieve that which Roman Abromovich could not and prize Luka Modric from Tottenham this coming August transfer window.
The Daily Star’s source told the paper,
“United are favourites now. Daniel Levy managed to persuade Luka to remain at the club last summer and now he has to do it all again.
The uncertainty over Harry doesn’t help the Spurs cause, really. If he goes to England they will have less bargaining power.”
Last summer of course we had a bizarre situation whereby the Croatian told the press that not only was he was aware of interest from Chelsea but he would be very happy to play for them as he had a, ‘gentleman’s agreement’ with Spurs’ chairman Daniel Levy.
Sadly for Modric, Levy publicly laughed off any suggestion of such a deal and instead insisted that the ink on the player’s recently renewed contract was still wet and so he would be expected to honour it.
Chelsea were rumoured to have come back in with an increased bid, but the whole story smacked of the press trying to squeeze the pips out of an initial enquiry that was squarely rebuffed.
And so now it’s Manchester United who are supposedly homing in on Modric. Is this interest for real? Who knows? Despite Tottenham having a – until recently – great run Modric hasn’t really pulled up any trees this season. Yes, he’s an incredibly gifted player but if the rumoured figures north of £30million are to be bandied about it is far more believable to me if this sort of money would come out of Abramovich’s back pocket than the working capital of MUFC.
That said, United are without doubt in a genuine state of transition with a mix of youth and veterans… watch this space.
